To begin with  let me tease you with 5 top tips to get you thinking about your new Primary PE Program for 2013/14.

1. Audit

One of the key messages from the Association for PE (afPE) is to AUDIT the needs of the School, staff, children and young people. We would advise that you take your time and really understand what’s on offer in your area and how it will add the most value to your school. Find out more about the Association for PE

2. Up-Skill

Longevity is key – Create a varied FUN plan based around UP-SKILLING teachers so the plan can be maintained when this funding comes to an end. Kath Rudd – PE Advisor for Active Dorset says that this approach will provide both motivation for the current staff and longevity for the development of high quality physical development.

3. Specialists 

Specialist can be used in areas of PE as long as staff also learn from these opportunities. We would advise you to use a specialist initially to support and develop staff in weaker parts of PE and then source good quality approved resources to back up the training.  Look at resources with pre-written tried and tested lesson plans /schemes. Teacher training videos and flash cards will also make are a useful teaching aid which can be reused. You could also film your CPD training and give staff a copy. 

4. Engaging and FUN

Favour activities that include ALL children throughout the entire lesson rather than activities that allow children to stand watching others have a go at something. Children become unfocused and bored and could have a negative unproductive experience.

5. Dont be tempted by fads

Expensive faddish equipment doesn’t mean Quality. Some sports equipment can be very expensive and completely under-utilised if teachers do not feel confident using it. Utilise as much of the equipment your school already has leaving more funding in the pot for up-skilling teachers.  My best buys have been inexpensive and perfect for Primary school games sporty activities and dance

• Coloured spots, cones and floor markers
• Coloured scarves and ribbons
• Hoops
• Beanbags
• Poms
• Soft balls (small, medium and large)
• Re-action balls
• Movement cubes
• Balancing discs
• Ropes

There are so many activities you can do with a relatively small toolkit!

Hey everyone

I’ve just read an article on the BBC news website about how Primary school teachers need much more support in teaching PE effectively.

Our research has uncovered the same problem, particularly when it comes to teaching the dreaded dance scheme –  its the old “OH NO, I’m teaching dance next term, quick let’s hide…” scenario.  Oh well, they should have gone to imoves :)…. or PE Scholar
